Homebuyer Education
Educating yourself is one of the most important things you can do in the home buying process, and you should ideally start as early in the process as possible. Are you ready to buy a home? Do you feel confident that you can commit to the time and expense of home ownership? Are you familiar with the real estate closing process? These are all questions you should address at the start of the process. Owning a home is a big responsibility, and this responsibility starts during the purchase process. There are many resources available to help you, including . . .
SCHA Homebuyer Education Workshops
These classes will provide an overview of the entire home buying process, including sections on:
- Deciding if you’re ready to buy a home
- Mortgage lending
- Real estate
- Post purchase
The SCHA recommends taking this class as early in the process as possible, as it can help you feel more confident and informed as you move forward. Many prior participants have said that they wished they took this class before they even started looking for a home because it would have given them more confidence and saved them some time spent asking questions.
The SCHA homebuyer education classes feature guest presenters who are able to share their expertise with you. The classes are certified by the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority (CHFA) and fulfill the requirements of certain loan programs. The classes also fulfill the education requirements for certain deed restricted developments. Best of all, they’re free!
All classes are held from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm in the Buffalo Mountain Room in the Summit County Commons (37 Peak One Drive; Frisco, CO – see map below). To sign up, please complete the online registration below at the link below. Classes often fill in advance, so register early to guarantee your spot! If you have problems, contact Jesse at [email protected] .
Other Homebuyer Education Options
Do you need to attend a homebuyer education class before your closing, but you can’t make any of the classes above? You have several other options.
If you need a CHFA-certified class, you can attend another agency’s class. The most current class schedule can be found on the CHFA website.
You can also take a CHFA-certified homebuyer education class online on your own schedule. Please note that the online courses are provided in partnership with eHome America and have a cost of $99 for the borrower and $50 for each additional co-borrower (a discount code is emailed to the co-borrower once the borrower registers with a co-borrower). After completion of the course, the SCHA will contact you for a ~30-minute follow-up session to review any items you answered incorrectly and see if you have any additional questions. You can register for the online class below.
***Starting on March 16, 2020, individuals may choose a free online homebuyer education option, which can be found on the CHFA website. Reimbursement for online fees paid will not be granted by either CHFA or their homebuyer education providers. You can scroll through the list to find the SCHA online option.***
Completion & Certification
Congratulations! You’ve completed a class and feel much more prepared to navigate the home buying process. Regardless of which class you took, you should receive a certificate of completion. Be sure to keep this certificate, as it is the proof that you’ve attended the course. Many certificates are good for up to one year, so having a valid certificate on file can prevent you from having to retake a class if it is required in the future. Of course, if you’d like to retake a class, we’d love to have you!
If you have any follow-up questions after you’ve completed the homebuyer education class, please contact us and we’d be happy to assist you.
